Cold temperatures and snowfall often leave driveways and walkways icy and unsafe. While rock salt is the most common solution, experts recommend considering more sustainable options due to its environmental impact.

Rock salt, or sodium chloride, melts ice by lowering water’s freezing point but becomes less effective below 15°F. It can also damage plants, contaminate water sources, and harm wildlife. Because of these risks, alternative deicers may be a better choice.

Calcium chloride works quickly and remains effective in extremely low temperatures, though it still contains chloride that can affect plants. Magnesium chloride is another option that absorbs moisture to prevent ice buildup and is considered less harmful to plants and animals. For the most eco-friendly choice, calcium magnesium acetate prevents ice from sticking to pavement and is safest for the environment, though it comes at a higher cost.

If you want to avoid chemicals altogether, natural alternatives like sand, cat litter, coffee grounds, beet juice, vinegar, or even sugar can improve traction or help melt ice with less environmental impact.

On roads, sodium chloride remains the most widely used deicer, though agencies like MDOT have also tested alternatives such as sugar beet byproducts to reduce environmental harm.

Choosing the right deicing method can help keep your driveway safe while protecting plants, water, and wildlife.
